Are you looking for the best eSIM for Hungary? You already have your holiday destination in central Europe. Let us take care of the research for you. We’ve prepared a list for you with the top 6 eSIMs for travelers.
No trip to Hungary can be complete without visiting Budapest, its capital. This city, on the banks of the Danube river, offers 2000 years of history. Formed by two separate cities Buda and Pest, it was in 1873 when it was created as a single city. One of the major cities of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, Budapest, offers its architecture, its history and its culture to visitors from all over the world.
There are a few things everyone must do in Budapest. Visit a thermal bath, we recommend Széchenyi or Gellért baths, tour around old Buda and check the views from the Fisherman’s Bastion, walk the Andrássy Avenue until you reach Heroes’ Square, and don’t miss out on eating some Goulash at the Great Market Hall.
Hungary, however, is more than Budapest: Lake Balaton, Pécs, Debrecen, Visegrád, the wine regions of Tokaj and Eger, Hortobágy National Park… there’s no end to the attractions this country can offer, so make sure you stay connected during your holiday and get yourself an eSIM for your internet needs in Hungary.

What’s an eSIM and how do I get one?
An eSIM is an embedded SIM card, i.e. a digital SIM installed on your mobile phone or device that allows switching carriers via software. With an eSIM, you can download a network profile and use it on your phone without the need of a physical SIM card.
To get yourself one you can search for it on the internet, and after choosing the one that you prefer and buying it, you’ll receive a QR code and instructions on your email.
By scanning said QR code, you can activate the new eSIM profile and use it together with your physical SIM card.
eSIMs are a great option if you’re traveling to Europe, since they allow you to have your home carrier profile for calls and SMS and your recently purchased eSIM profile to take care of your internet needs abroad, avoiding expensive roaming costs.

Orange eSIM Holidays: Your best option
The best offer of our list. Its incredible price per GB of 0.83 €/GB comes with 30GB of data to use within 15 days. In addition, Orange offers a Spanish phone number to use not only in Hungary, but anywhere in Europe, with 100 minutes of international voice calls and SMS for a credit.
Orange eSIM Holidays is, without a doubt, the best option to travel to Hungary, even over local prepaid SIM cards, since, even though tit requires an ID check, this process is integrated in the purchase process and can be done entirely online, without having to visit a local store, therefore, avoiding the language barrier completely.
Nomad: Own network with a higher price
Nomad offers 4G connection with their Truphone network (available in all of their offers). With 5 plans, 1GB, 3GB, 5GB, 10GB and 20GB, the best offer is the 20GB data one, with a price per GB of 1.8 €/GB.
Basically, Nomad offers less data for a higher price.
MEO Enjoy Europe: Enough data with a good price per GB
MEO offers 5GB and 15GB of data to use in a selection of European countries, including Hungary. With a price per GB of around 1.66 €/GB with its best offer, it is a good option if you don’t want to provide an ID verification.
Redteago: 1 or 2 or 3 plans
With Redteago, we have an issue. While on their website they offer 3 eSIMs for Hungary and in several eSIM databases only 2 show up, using the app, we’ve only been able to access 1 plan.
We’ll consider only the plan we’ve been provided: 1GB of data for $1.99 (€1.83) with 4G coverage.
Redteago, however, offers European regional plans for 36 countries, ranging from 1 to 5GB. Their price per GB is way above the one offered by Orange, with the lowest one (for Europe) being 2.5 €/GB.
Airalo Szia! 4 expensive prepaid plans
Airalo’s Szia! eSIMs provide 4 cards for Hungary with 1, 3, 5 and 10 gigabytes of data for prices ranging from €4.50 to €22. Their cheapest plan costs 2 €/GB, more than double the price offered by Orange eSIM Holidays.
Bnesim: A subscription model with a single use option.
Bnesim offers 3 cards, 1 with a prepaid model and 2 with a subscription. The prepaid card provides 1GB, 3GB, 5GB, 10GB or 20GB of data packages. The subscription cards offer a validity of 1 day or 1 month. Depending on your needs, you may choose the internet package of your choice.
With the cheapest price per GB being the 100GB monthly subscription for €137.90, we find that the payment is way too high for what’s offered, even more if you consider that if you’re looking for a subscription plan, you might get better offers with Hungarian network operators
eSIMs by Hungarian Operators
While Hungarian operators offer eSIMs to their customers, Yettel is the only one offering it for prepaid plans, and as a foreigner, you have to buy it in person. Yettel and Magyar Telekom have interesting eSIMs if you’re willing to spend your time looking for a shop or reseller to provide your ID verification, but even though they are local, they still can’t compete with our top choice Orange eSIM Holidays.
If you travel to Hungary, it will always be more convenient to buy a prepaid card online from the comfort of your home.
eSIM compatible devices
The major drawback of eSIMs is the fact that not all mobile phones or devices are compatible with them. They are not as commonly available as SIM cards, so check if your device supports eSIMs before you buy one.
As an overview, since the release of the iPhone XR and iPhone 11, eSIMs have been widely accessible for Apple smartphones. For Samsung, Google, or other android devices, only some mobile phones offer eSIM compatibility, like the Galaxy models after the Galaxy S20, or the Google Pixel 3 and 3XL.
Check our list of compatible devices or the eSIM supplier’s list of compatible devices to ensure that you may use eSIMs on your mobile phone, and, in case you’re still in doubt, your phone’s manufacturer or your home carrier may be able to help you.
